About Chess for Android
Play chess on Android with a full-featured engine and intuitive interface designed for players of all levels. Chess for Android combines a powerful built-in chess engine with flexible move input — use your touch screen, trackball, or keyboard to enter moves in standard notation (e2e4, e1g1 for castling, and more). Whether you're learning, practicing, or analyzing, you'll find tools tailored to your needs.
The move coach highlights valid moves during input and shows the engine's last move, helping you learn as you play. Navigate through entire games move-by-move to correct mistakes, analyze critical positions, or study your play. Import and export games in FEN and PGN formats via clipboard or file sharing, or set up custom positions with the built-in editor. The engine recognizes all standard draw conditions: stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty-move rule, and threefold repetition.
Choose your challenge level — play against the engine at multiple difficulty settings, watch it face itself in auto-play mode, or use free-play for a magnetic chessboard experience. You control which side you play and can view the board from white or black's perspective independently, giving you complete flexibility for analysis or casual play.
For advanced players, Chess for Android supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and multiple engine protocols (WinBoard and XBoard), letting you load powerful third-party engines and even run tournaments between them. Import engines from Android Open Exchange format, Android Chessbase-compatible files, or directly from your SD card. Fine-tune engine performance with time controls, pondering, infinite analysis, hash table settings, multi-threading, endgame tablebases, and opening test suites.
Connect to physical electronic chessboards including Certabo, Chessnut, ChessUp, DGT, House of Staunton, and Millennium models for a tactile experience. Play online against real opponents on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) or ICC (Internet Chess Club). Chess for Android adapts to your play style — whether you're a beginner exploring the game or a serious player seeking deep analysis and engine customization.
